Making shortcuts to Shutdown/Restart/Lock your computer

You may probably have the question like "why do I need shortcuts to shutdown, restart, or lock my computer when they are already in the Start menu". Well sometimes, or probably in most times, you may just want to do such actions by double-clicking on desktop icon.

Shutdown Shortcut

  • Right-click on the Desktop, select "New" and then "Shortcut'.
  • On the Create Shortcut Window, type "Shutdown.exe -s -t 00" and then click Next.

  • On the next screen, enter the name of the shortcut and then click on Finish.

Below are some of the commands and their corresponding functions that you can use on your shortcuts.

- Shutdown.exe -s -t 00 – Shutdown Computer
- Shutdown.exe -r -t 00 – Restart
- Rundll32.exe User32.dll,LockWorkStation – Lock
- rundll32.exe PowrProf.dll,SetSuspendState – Hibernate
- rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState 0,1,0 - Sleep

Changing Your Shortcut's Icon

Currently, the default icon for your shortcut is not that pleasing to look at. Since you might be creating many more shortcuts, let's try changing the icon of the one we've just created.

  • Right-click on the shortcut in your desktop and select Properties.
  • On the Properties window, go to the Shortcut tab and click on the Change Icon… button.
  • Select the appropriate icon from the list and click on OK.

Now your Shutdown Computer shortcut has different look and cam be distinguished from the rest of your shortcut just with its looks.
